Sibling Green Card (Detailed)

Can a Green Card Holder Sponsor a Sibling?

No. Only U.S. citizens can sponsor brothers and sisters for a green card. Lawful permanent residents (green card holders) cannot petition for siblings.

If you are a permanent resident who wishes to sponsor a sibling, you must first become a U.S. citizen.

What Happens to the Petition If the Petitioner Becomes a Citizen After Filing?

If a permanent resident files an I-130 for a child and then later naturalizes, the child’s category may automatically upgrade. For siblings, you must be a citizen at the time of filing.

Long-Term Strategy for F4 Cases

  • File the I-130 as early as possible to secure the earliest priority date
  • Monitor the Visa Bulletin monthly for priority date movement
  • Update contact information and documents over the years
  • Plan for the long wait by understanding what will be needed when the date becomes current

We offer a long-term case monitoring service to keep your F4 petition on track over the years.
