Overview
The F-1 visa is the primary student visa for foreign nationals pursuing academic studies at SEVP-certified U.S. universities, colleges, high schools, conservatories, and language programs. F-1 students may work on-campus, pursue Curricular Practical Training (CPT) during studies, and Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. F-1 is heavily used as a pathway to H-1B and employment-based green cards.
Eligibility Requirements
Acceptance to SEVP-certified U.S. school; intent to pursue full course of study; sufficient financial resources without unauthorized employment; nonimmigrant intent (intent to depart at end of studies); proficiency in English (or enrollment in English program); and ties to home country.
Application Process
Step 1: Apply and gain admission to SEVP-certified school. Step 2: School issues Form I-20. Step 3: Pay SEVIS fee. Step 4: Apply for F-1 visa at U.S. consulate via DS-160. Step 5: Enter U.S. up to 30 days before program start.
Required Documentation
Required: I-20 from SEVP-certified school; SEVIS fee receipt; financial documentation showing ability to fund studies; academic credentials; passport valid 6 months beyond stay; visa interview at consulate (with limited exceptions); and demonstration of nonimmigrant intent.
Government Filing Fees
SEVIS fee $350; Visa application fee $185; School-specific fees not included.
Processing Timeline
Consular processing varies by post (1–8 weeks); F-1 valid for duration of status (D/S) — entire program length plus grace periods.
