FORMS: Form DS-160 (consular)
The I visa is for foreign media representatives — including print journalists, broadcast journalists, film/television documentary crews, photographers, freelance journalists, and similar information-gathering personnel — coming to the U.S. to engage in their profession. The I visa is purpose-specific: only for activities essential to the foreign information medium.
Applicant must represent a bona fide foreign media organization (employed by or contracted with); engage in news-gathering or other informational activities; the activities must be primarily informational (not commercial entertainment, advertising, or promotion); and the home office must be in a foreign country.
Apply at U.S. consulate with DS-160, supporting employer documentation, project description, and credentials. The I visa is generally NOT issued in the U.S. — applicants must apply at consulates abroad.
Required: employment letter from foreign media organization; description of journalistic activities; credentials (press card, association memberships); home country/organization documentation; and project itinerary if applicable.
Visa application fee.
Consular processing 2–6 weeks; Initial admission for duration of activities (often 'duration of status'); Renewable as long as media work continues.
We assist foreign correspondents, documentary filmmakers, freelance journalists, and media production crews with I visa filings, particularly for sensitive coverage areas, long-term U.S.- based assignments, and transitions to other visa categories.
