Overview
STEM OPT provides a 24-month extension to standard 12-month OPT for graduates of qualifying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) programs. Combined with initial OPT, STEM OPT allows up to 36 months of work authorization — sufficient time for multiple H-1B cap registrations. STEM OPT requires E-Verify employer participation and a structured training plan (Form I-983).
Eligibility Requirements
Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in DHS-designated STEM field; employed by E-Verify enrolled employer; valid initial OPT period; structured training plan (Form I-983) reviewed by school; and direct employer-employee relationship (no third-party staffing arrangements without specific compliance).
Application Process
Filed during initial OPT (within 90 days before initial OPT expiration). Form I-765 plus Form I- 983 training plan. School DSO recommendation in SEVIS.
