TN Visa (Canada / Mexico — USMCA)

Overview

The TN visa, established under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA, formerly NAFTA), provides streamlined work authorization for Canadian and Mexican professionals in approximately 60 designated occupations. Canadians may apply directly at U.S. ports of entry without prior petition; Mexicans require consular visa processing. TN is renewable indefinitely with no maximum stay.

Eligibility Requirements

Beneficiary must be Canadian or Mexican citizen; the position must be on the USMCA professional list (engineers, scientists, accountants, lawyers, computer systems analysts, management consultants, etc.); beneficiary must hold required degree or credentials; and U.S. employment offer must be temporary in nature.

Application Process

Canadian citizens: present application at U.S. port of entry or pre-flight inspection (or file I-129 from within U.S.). Mexican citizens: must obtain TN visa at U.S. consulate before traveling. Applications include offer letter, credentials, and citizenship documentation.

Required Documentation

Required: proof of citizenship (Canadian or Mexican); detailed offer letter from U.S. employer specifying TN-listed occupation; credentials matching occupation requirements (degree, license, etc.); evidence of temporary nature of work; and credentials evaluation if foreign-educated.

Border filing fee for Canadians; Visa fees for Mexicans; I-129 fees if filed in U.S.
