Consular processing is the pathway for family members who are outside the United States when they apply for a green card. The process is handled through the National Visa Center (NVC) and concluded with an immigrant visa interview at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

The Consular Processing Steps

File Form I-130 with USCIS
Wait for USCIS approval, then NVC intake
Submit required documents to NVC (civil documents, financial support)
Complete Form DS-260 (Immigrant Visa Application) online
Attend medical examination with an approved physician
Attend immigrant visa interview at U.S. embassy
Receive immigrant visa and travel to the United States
Green card mailed after entry
