Parents Green Card (Detailed)

What Documents Do You Need to Sponsor a Parent?

  • Your U.S. birth certificate or naturalization certificate (proof of citizenship)
  • Parent’s birth certificate or other proof of relationship
  • Parent’s passport and prior immigration records
  • Form I-864 Affidavit of Support (with tax returns and pay stubs)
  • Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative)
  • Medical examination results (I-693)

Can Both Parents Be Sponsored at the Same Time?

Yes. If both your mother and father are eligible and wish to immigrate, you can file separate I-130 petitions for each parent.

The petitions can be processed simultaneously, and both parents can attend their consular interviews at the same embassy on the same day in most cases.

Can My Sponsored Parent Work While the Case Is Pending?

Once your parent’s adjustment of status application (I-485) is filed inside the U.S., they can apply for a work permit (EAD) and travel document (Advance Parole) concurrently.

If processing via consular processing, they receive their immigrant visa and become a permanent resident upon entry, with work authorization included.
