M-1 Vocational Student Visa

FORMS: Form I-20 (M-1), Form DS-160

Overview

The M-1 visa is for vocational and other non-academic studies — for example, technical schools, trade schools, mechanics' programs, and culinary arts. M-1 has more restrictive work authorization rules than F-1 (limited practical training only, no CPT) and a maximum stay of one year (extendable for cause).

Eligibility Requirements

Acceptance to SEVP-certified vocational school; full course of study at vocational/non-academic institution; sufficient financial resources; nonimmigrant intent.

Application Process

Similar to F-1: school issues I-20; SEVIS fee; consular interview; entry to U.S. up to 30 days before program.

Required Documentation

Standard student visa documentation, with vocational program emphasis.

Government Filing Fees

SEVIS fee; visa application fee.

Processing Timeline

Initial admission 1 year; extensions for cause; total maximum 3 years.
