CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

FORMS: DSO authorization (no USCIS filing)

Overview

CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is work authorization integral to F-1 students' curriculum — typically internships, cooperative education, or required practical training. Unlike OPT, CPT is authorized by the school's DSO (no USCIS filing). However, 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility — making CPT timing strategically critical.

Eligibility Requirements

Active F-1 status; completed at least one academic year (with limited exceptions for some programs); training is integral to curriculum (required, or for academic credit); and DSO authorization.

Application Process

School DSO authorizes CPT in SEVIS based on program structure. Authorization printed on I- 20.

Required Documentation

Proper integration into curriculum (required course or credit-bearing); DSO authorization; specific employer and dates.

Government Filing Fees

School-specific fees may apply; no USCIS fee.

Processing Timeline

Authorization can be granted same day by DSO once program criteria met.

Why Choose Our Firm

We counsel students and employers on CPT compliance, especially in 'day-1 CPT' programs that have come under USCIS and DOL scrutiny. CPT misuse can lead to status violations, OPT loss, and even fraud findings.
